April Ross

April Ross is one of only a few female beach volleyball stars to win medals at more than one Olympics. Alix Klineman has become a brand new Olympian and is set to join the team in Tokyo. Ross is hoping to secure her Olympic debut gold, however, she also hopes to earn even more. And at the age of 39, this could be her final chance to achieve it. She remains optimistic that she can achieve top honors. Ross told NBC Boston that if they play their best, and even play well her team could win a gold medal. "I'm also going to try to have a bit of luck." Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she lived with her parents as well as a her sister. She went on to compete in a myriad of sports at Newport Harbor High School. Her prep athletic career included indoor volleyball, as well as basketball, running and track. However she was clearly a cut above the rest in this latter game. According to her bio, she played an outside blocker as well as a middle hitting volleyball player throughout her time in high school. Gatorade Circle of Champions named her the National Player of 1999. She also captured the award in 2000. Orange County Athlete of the Award for volleyball. Ross and Klineman may have begun working together in 2017, but Ross had already been a seasoned athlete at the beach prior to when they teamed up. It's true that she's won multiple big tournaments and one of them was a volleyball superstar. From 2007 until 2013, she was partnered with Jennifer Kessy, who is the coach she is currently. Along together with Kessy Ross, she won the World Championship in 2009 when she competed internationally. At the 2012 Olympic Games, they were awarded a gold medal. Misty Maytreanor (Jennings) and Misty Maytreanor won gold, overtaking them. Ross became Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's departure. The pair were awarded bronze medals at the Rio Olympics for beach volleyball. In high school and the several years prior to hitting the sand professionally, Ross balled out with the Trojans of USC as an NCAA. Her experience at USC was quite impressive. When she was a freshman at the school in 2000 she earned Pac-10 and NCAA All-American Freshman of Year honors and was an All-American. Also, she was one of the key players for helping the Trojans make it to the Final Four. The Trojans suffered a significant personal loss during her sophomore year, however, she was capable of achieving the All-American distinction. Over her final two years in the program she led the Trojans towards the summit by winning two consecutive national championships. Individually she had cemented her place as a legend winning the 2003-2004 Honda Sports Award as the highest ranked female volleyball player. Ross played international relations as a major at USC. Margie Ross, Ross' mother, never had the opportunity to see her daughter grow into the beach volleyball's biggest star. Ross's mom died from breast carcinoma in the year 2001. Ross had just become an undergraduate student in the second year at USC. Her mother is still very dearly. And Margie is an ongoing source of motivation for her at the beach as well as in everyday life.
